For every one life is not just a walk in the park it is full of choices. Some people use these decisions in choosing a career. Here are a few choice mistakes that people make. The first and biggest mistake people make is saying “I can’t” any one can do what ever they want in life as long as they are willing to put in the hard work and effort. High school and collage are the times you need to start experimenting with some thing new. The second mistake is getting dollar signs in your eyes. Money isn’t everything! If money is your only aspect in life you may not be so happy with your job. In a study only 14 percent of people who make more than $50,000 a year are truly happy with their job. The third major mistake that young adults make is doing what there parents expect out of them. It’s your life! Your parents can’t decide what you should do when choosing a career. Assuming that a job won’t be useful in building experience is another big lapse in judgment made as well. Any type of work environment is important. It teaches you about getting to work on time or meeting deadlines. The last one is going in alone!!! Your parent, siblings, teacher, supervisors are all great mentors to help you with your career. Remember they have been in your situation also.

RISKY Business

It’s not new to hear that summer jobs are the best but with these jobs new hazards come in to play. About 70 teens die each year from work related injuries and tens of thousands visit the emergency room. Hare are a few precautions you can take to prevent hazards your summer job. If you work in a restaurant there are many different things that can injure you. Slow down just because you boss or a customer is getting tired you safety is more important than the food. Wear covered non slip shoes, and clean up any wet areas to avoid falling. You never know when something is shot so use dry cloths when cooking, always use tongs than your hands, wear long sleeve cotton clothing as well. The most important thing to do when working in a restaurant is to be aware of you surroundings. People who work in a store don’t think it's dangerous but it is one of the main causes of injury and death. So to stay out of harms way NEVER work alone make sure you’re in the sight of at least one other employee, wear a weight belt, don’t try to carry all items at once, and use machinery to carry large or add object to protect your back. Take training on how to handle a situation whether it is a robbery or just an angry customer. If you have an out door job always wear sunscreen. Be sure to drink 16 to 30 ounces of fluids per hour to stay hydrated. If you are experiencing sweating, no sweating at all, dizziness, nausea, headache, weakness, or confusion tell some one you could have heat stroke. Wear bug repellent and protective clothing; it helps keep bugs with fatal diseases away. See your doctor to check if you are up to date with all your shots. Many jobs that are in the heavy machinery area are illegal to people under the age of 18. Some are available to teens. If you work at one of these jobs you: should always know what you can and cannot do. Get plenty of sleep and wear all required equipment. Always protect your ears.

High-Tech Nursing

Today with all of the technology out in the world it’s comforting to know that some of it is going to better protect our health. Nurses today can use so many high-tech devices to precisely measure a patient’s oxygen level, deliver exact amounts of medicine through a vein, and document patient care electronically. These are just a few of the many different things that nurses can do with high-tech items. Years ago to check if a patients oxygen level were dropping they would look for a blue color in the lips or fingernails to day the use a “pulse oximeter” which is put on the finger and measures the amount of oxygen in a persons blood. About thirty years ago one of the first high-tech machines was the infusion pump which was used to deliver a certain amount of liquid to a persons veins today they are smaller, more accurate, and smarter. Some specially trained nurses can assist surgeons in the operating room to endoscopic vein harvesting this is where a nurse uses a high-tech tool to take a large vein out of the leg they use it to reroute blood around a blocked artery in the heart. To perform this procedure before a surgeon would make an incision from the groin to the ankle. With all the technology in the world nurses are more that just nurses they are computer technician. Many new nurses practice on mannequins or video “games”.

Making Scents

Have you ever wondered what makes a candle smell so good? Well a woman named Hannah Follis knows all about this. When she was younger she was one of the rare species of students who actually liked to go to Biology class. She was so interested in the science of living organisms. She fallowed her [passion to the University of Minnesota which prepared her for her future career. After college Follis found an ad on career builder.com when she thought about it making scented candles didn’t sound so bad. Before the candle even hits the shelves there are many different steps that have to be taken. First the company thinks about what products are needed. From there Follis will select many different scents one perfume can have as many as 100 different scents. When the formula is correct many different test are performed such as how well the candle performs under different types of lighting or at different temperatures. The next step is giving the candle to the retailers if they like it then it is sold if they don’t the company works with the scent so that its perfect and can be sold in stores across the country. Its amazing how many different scent combinations there are like coconut milk mango, sea lily, pineapple cilantro. It’s also funny how a scent that is absolutely terrible to one person is the sweetest smelling thing in the world.

EVERYWHERE A SIGN

As we all know some people are deaf and have hearing impairments. This doesn’t mean that they can’t experience things the way people with out hearing problems can. That’s where people like Ruth Murphy come in. Ruth is a certified interpreter for the deaf. Sign interpreting is a growing career it is both emotionally satisfying and lucrative plus the skills are always on demand. Rob Hills says this is a great job for people who want to make the world a better place. There are 28 million Americans who are deaf or hearing impaired which is 10 percent of the U.S. population. The need for interpreters has grown because ASL affects every field from business to medical. In the ASL field it can lead you to different jobs you can work in college, elementary, schools, hospitals, and any type of business. If a conversation last for more than 20 minutes a team is likely to help and take turns. Many people help patents in remote locations take classes over the internet as well this is some what new. Don’t feel tempted to quite at first it’s a whole new language for you it may be hard at first but it’ not impossible.

PICTURE POWER

People every where at one point or another imagine themselves doing something great. This visualization gives us something to look forward to doing in the future. It is more of a motivation for us. The truth is that visualizing is not that hard you do it every time you daydream. One way of seeing your goals better is by creating a collage. Yes a collage like the ones you used to make in grade school. To start go through different magazines books even the internet, cut out pictures of the things you like, things you want to become things that just interest you, sayings, when you have that all together start gluing them to the poster board and before you know it you have a collage. Hang it up in a place you see everyday like your locker or you room it helps you stay on task.

Lights, Camera, Internet Hookup

At age eight a man named Doug Cheney premiered his first movie to about 20 people, like friends and family. Today he produces movies that are about 90 seconds long. But thanks to the internet his audience has went from a handful to millions of video podcast viewers.

Beyond YouTube
People can’t really make a living by putting videos of their brother dancing to Moby. But it does give future producers, writers, editors, and actors to show their talents for online viewing. Doug has produced different internet shows, also known as “webisodes”, such as Sam Has 7 Friend, the story of a young actor who was to be killed on December 15, 2006. Prom Queen another murder mystery.

Tell a Story. Make It Snappy.
Many different media devices such as phones and MP3 players can now hold videos thus allowing the owners to want more content in them. Jennifer Morris thinks that entertainment for handheld devices will remain to be small in form. But some people who have started in the Internet media did not stay there they are making their shows into half hour TV shows.

Set the Course People who work in the Internet entertainment business are Pioneers. They didn’t get there jobs running coffee to big time movie producers but do have experience in the movie making industry. For example Doug Cheney’s first job was loading film into cameras, Jennifer Morris is an actor with credits such as ER and Law and Order Aaron Yonda majored in English at the University of Wisconsin and learned to use film equipment at the local television station.

Up In Arms

This past fall a few of the teachers in Harrold, Texas returned back to school with just a little bit more than books with them. Some of the teachers actually had guns with them. However the school board decided to let them carry guns with them. The reason is because the school officials are worried about the children’s safety. There have been far too many school shootings in U.S. schools and no one at those schools were prepared to stop the shooters. Some people argue though that letting teachers carry guns is putting the child’s life in dander not making it safer.

READY FOR THE WROST
Superintendent David Thweat says Harrolds teachers must protect their students. The nearest police station is 30 miles away. The school bored has tried to use other ways to protect the students such as using keyless entries, camera system, and class room phones. The district can’t afford security guards so they had the teachers trained to carry weapons. The school bored must approve the teachers that are carrying guns. The teachers have training in crisis management and hostage situations.

PUTTING KIDS AT RISK
Arguers say that the act of putting guns into the classrooms is a very dangerous act. Further more they say that school shootings are very rare less than one percent of children who are killed are attacked in school. Having guns in class raises the risk of them being taken and being miss used. What if a teacher or student gets angry and knows that there is a gun within reach. Teachers are there to educate not to act as security guards.

WALL STREET BLUES

The economy today is in the worst state that it has ever been in. Businesses are losing money, like the Lehman brothers who lost so much money because of bad loans that it had to close. That day was a bad day for the U.S. stock market because it dropped 504 points and investors started to pull out their money. This got so out of hand that the U.S. Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson had to steo in and ask for a $700 billion bailout for banks and other struggling financial institutions.

What happened?
The trouble started out minor. When people started wanting to buy home that were too expensive for them. Banks gave these people subprime mortages at first the loan payments were low monthly payments. By as time went by the payments grew larger and larger until the homeowners could not make payments at all. Banks started taking homes. When they tried reselling the homes were worth less than the loans themselves! The banks lost a lot of money.

The dominoes fall
In early September two of the nations leading mortgage leaders almost failed because of all the bad loans they were carrying. The country couldn’t risk letting them fail so the government poured $200 billion into fixing them. Then it lent AIG $85 billion dollars to it from failing too. But all that money had no effect on bouncing back the economy.

The big bailout
The U.S. secretary asked for $700 billion dollars to by up bad loans and work with barrowers to get repaid. With bad loans out of the way the banks can lend money more freely.

What now?
The national dept is $10 trillion before bailout. Its higher now, and tax payers will have to pay it off.
